Chapter 12

Twenty minutes after Harry agreed to let Eddie drive him back to the mansion, the two climbed out of Eddie’s electric coupe in front of the elder Fagen’s residence. Harry hadn’t taken a step from the curb when he stopped and said, “I was right.” Harry pointed and Eddie looked, but there was nothing to see. The light of dawn was creeping up the towering buildings, but it was still not yet light enough for the streetlamps to flick off.

“I can see new prints since we left.” Harry walked to the entrance as Eddie punched the code into the keypad. The front door popped open and Eddie held it open.

“Where?” said Eddie, turning about to see. “Footprints? On the floor? I can’t see anything.”

“They glow with residual heat,” said Harry. “Not in your field of vision.”

“Like infrared?”

“Exactly.”

Harry lingered at the open front door and looked up the street where the tracks led. “This way,” said Harry.

Eddie looked doubtful and wanted to check to see that the computer was indeed missing.

“Time is fleeting,” said Harry, “so catch up with me if you can.” Harry could tell the young man was torn between going with Harry or first verifying the theft. “Your call, Eddie,” said Harry, adding, “gotta go” as he moved off up the street.

Eddie paused a moment before closing the door and starting after Harry. Surprisingly, Harry was already at the end of the block. “Fast for an old guy,” said Eddie, breaking into a jog. By the time he caught up, they were another city block farther away. Harry had wandered into an alley and was peering at a pile of garbage.

“What are you doing?” Eddie asked.

“Nothing,” Harry said, shaking his head and backing away. “Our burglar took a water break here.”

“My God. What kind of person are we dealing with?”

“One with a full bladder.”

“Not anymore, apparently.”

“Definitely a female.”

Eddie looked shocked. “A female?”

“Females piss. Didn’t you know that?”

“Well, of course, I’m just not used to using such coarse language in regard to, uh, females.”

“That’s probably best in the circles you keep,” said Harry.

“My friends certainly don’t go around peeing in alleys. Especially girls I know. Any girls I know.”

“No telling how long she had to wait in the house for everyone to leave,” said Harry. “She was probably ready to explode.” Harry started off up the street again. “This way,” he said.

Eddie was embarrassed and he didn’t know why. A half-block further, a light rain started, and Harry stepped beneath a canvas overhang and waited for Eddie to catch up.

When Eddie stepped onto the little porch out of the rain, Harry said, “Il pleut.”

Eddie answered in German, “Das ist schade.”

Harry nodded.

“That’s going to affect your tracking ability. Right? Wash away the footsteps?”

“You are only partially correct.”

“How’s that?”

“While it is true the rain is washing away our track, it’s all right because we don’t need it anymore.”

“Don’t need it anymore? What, you got some new special ability you want to show me now?”

“No, not at all.” Harry pointed across
